You have likely heard about gut health and the significant impact it can have on your overall health. Our modern day diet, chronic stress and lack of physical activity can be detrimental to gut health leading to poor digestion, chronic inflammation and even chronic diseases.
The gut microbiome is composed of trillions of different bacteria (probiotics), and those bacteria need a fuel source (prebiotics) to thrive. A diet rich in prebiotics and probiotics will ensure a healthy and balanced microbiome which ultimately helps maintain overall health.
Improving your gut health does not have to be complicated and I encourage you to think about what you can add to improve your gut health versus what you have to take away. First, aim to eat more fiber rich foods including fruits, vegetables, whole grains and legumes. Garlic, onions, bananas and asparagus are great sources of prebiotics. Fermented foods like yogurt, kimchi and sauerkraut are great sources of probiotics. Swapping processed snacks for whole food based options will ensure you are supporting your friendly flora as well. Lastly, stress has a HUGE impact on your microbiome health. Keeping your stress levels in check is vital to improving gut health. This can be as simple as a daily walk outside in nature, meditation, yoga, massage- anything that brings you joy!
Small changes in your diet and lifestyle can lead to huge changes in gut health leading to a longer, healthier life!
